One More Run, One More Patch: The Psychology of Being Heard in Hades and Hades II
My current chapter project, “One More Run, One More Patch: The Psychology of Being Heard in Hades and Hades II,” examines how Supergiant Games’ early access development model turns player feedback into part of the emotional experience of the game. The Hades games are built around return: players die, learn, revise their strategies, and try again. This chapter argues that early access creates a similar rhythm outside the game, as players return after updates, discuss changes, offer feedback, and watch the game evolve over time. Rather than claiming to know what players privately felt, I analyze how players publicly described feeling heard, ignored, invested, frustrated, or connected during the early access periods of Hades and Hades II. By reading Steam reviews, discussion posts, patch notes, and developer communications together, the chapter explores how early access can create a powerful sense of agency and community without making players equal authors of the game.
